اصطلاح روزه متناوب به معنای کاهش دریافت کالری به صورت متناوب است. این می تواند از چند ساعت در طول روز تا یک دوره کامل 24 ساعته متفاوت باشد. این کار را می توان به دلایل مذهبی مانند در ماه رمضان یا یوم کیپور یا به دلایل بهداشتی از جمله کاهش وزن انجام داد. در این مقاله، ما فقط به روزه‌های متناوب غیرمذهبی که برای اهداف سلامتی انجام می‌شود، می‌پردازیم و مزایای آن، بالقوه یا ثابت شده، و همچنین نگرانی‌های ایمنی در بیماران مبتلا به دیابت نوع 1 و 2 را بررسی می‌کنیم.
